American Art Pottery

Art pottery from the Middle West's kilns

The American art-pottery movement ran from the 1870s to the 1920s and was self-consciously an alternative to factory tableware: matte glazes, hand decoration, and a maker's name on the base.

What to look for

A potter's mark, a matte rather than glossy glaze, and throwing or carving marks that no mould would leave.
