Art Deco Decorative
The objects that carried the style into a room
Not every Art Deco object is furniture or a vessel. Clocks, mirrors, radios, sculpture and jewellery carried the same geometry into the smaller parts of the interior, and they are where the period reached its widest audience.
This is also where the style meets new materials first: Bakelite in jewellery and radio cases, mirrored glass in panels, and cast composition in place of carved wood.
History
The 1920s are the geometric phase: stepped mirrors, mantel clocks and figurative sculpture.
The 1930s are the streamlined phase, when radios and small appliances take the shape the style had given to trains.
What to look for
Original mirrored glass rather than replaced, working or period-correct movements, and Bakelite with an even colour rather than sun-faded.
