Czech Cubism

The only place cubism became furniture

In Prague, cubism left the canvas and became chairs, cups, door handles and facades. Every surface is faceted, and the angles are structural rather than applied.

It lasted barely fifteen years and was made in small numbers, which makes it among the rarest periods in this museum.

What to look for

Faceted planes rather than curves, sharp diagonal edges, and a maker's mark from a Prague workshop.
