German Porcelain

Meissen, and four centuries of marks

Meissen broke the Chinese monopoly in 1710, and every German factory after it defined itself against Meissen. The crossed swords are the most forged mark in ceramics.

What to look for

A mark that is painted under the glaze, a hard-paste body, and modelling sharp enough to show the mould was fresh.
