Queen Anne

The cabriole leg and the end of ornament for its own sake

Short and enormously influential. The high back gives way to a curved one, the turned leg to the cabriole, and carving retreats to a shell or a single knee.

Almost everything the English tradition is recognised by — the walnut chair with a vase splat, the lowboy, the secret drawer — settles into place in these twelve years.

What to look for

Cabriole legs ending in a pad or claw, a curved yoke back, and veneered walnut rather than solid oak.
