Sicilian Baroque

The most ornamented Baroque in Europe

After the earthquake of 1693, south-eastern Sicily rebuilt itself in a Baroque that ignored restraint entirely: putti, masks, scrolls, and balconies held up by carved figures.

The region is the reason to look at Italian furniture beyond Venice and Florence, and it is still comparatively undervalued.

What to look for

Carved masks and figures, deep scrollwork, and a warmth of colour that comes from local stone and walnut.
