Tapestry

Woven painting, and the workshop behind it

A tapestry is a painting made of wool and silk, and its value is in the workshop as much as the design: the same cartoon woven in Brussels and in Aubusson are different objects.

History

Medieval and Renaissance tapestries were woven to designs by painters, in workshops whose mark sits in the border.

From the eighteenth century the workshops become factories, and Aubusson and Gobelins production is documented enough to date closely.

What to look for

Wool and silk wefts, a tapestry mark or workshop signature in the border, and colour that has faded evenly.
