Art Nouveau
The line, applied to everything
Art Nouveau's idea was that a single vocabulary could run through a chair, a poster, a lamp and a building. The vocabulary was one line, and it moved like a plant.
It lasted barely twenty years and changed everything it touched, which is why it is so collectable: the pieces are recognisable from across a room, and the good ones are far rarer than the imitations. Jugendstil, Stile Liberty and Modernisme are the same movement under three national names.
