Deutscher Werkbund

The argument that produced the Bauhaus

A federation of designers, architects and manufacturers who believed machine production could be good if it were designed well. It is the hinge between Jugendstil's craft and the Bauhaus's system.

Objects from the Werkbund are rarely labelled as such, which makes them the hardest and most interesting German period to collect.

What to look for

Restrained geometry, visible machine work, and typography or marks from the Werkbund exhibitions.
