Danish Golden Age

Empire forms, Danish proportion

A short, confident period in Copenhagen that produced painting, silver and furniture in a restrained Empire idiom — mahogany, clean lines, and ornament used sparingly.

The furniture is often mistaken for French Empire; the give-away is the proportions, which are smaller and quieter.

What to look for

Mahogany with minimal carving, classical motifs cut shallow, and Danish maker's stamps underneath.
