Neoclassical

Restraint, borrowed from antiquity

After a century of ornament, the line goes straight. Neoclassical design looks back at Greece and Rome and takes the calm parts: columns, urns, symmetry that rests rather than performs.

It is also the parent of most of the names in this museum. Empire, Regency, Biedermeier, Louis XVI and American Empire are all Neoclassical β€” different countries answering the same idea.

What to look for

Straight legs, unadorned planes, and ornament confined to a single band or a classical motif.
