Swedish Gustavian

Neoclassicism, painted pale and kept simple

Gustav III brought the classical revival home and lightened it: painted furniture instead of mahogany, straight tapered legs, and a palette of grey, cream and pale blue.

It is the Nordic answer to French neoclassicism, and the reason Scandinavian interiors look the way they do two centuries later.

What to look for

Original paint rather than stripped wood, tapered legs, and carved rosettes or fluting kept small.
